Rosie and I are on the road to Deloraine in Tasmania where I will be helping with the “Tasmanian Artist Blacksmiths “demonstration at the Tasmanian Craft Fair (I will be comparing and stopping them talking to girls while they build a piece of street furniture for the town . Cuttle Bone Casting
I made some new sterling silver earrings today using the Cuttle Bone Casting technique. There’s lots of cuttle bone on the beaches around Byron Bay and it’s fun to collect. It’s very soft so you can use just about anything to carve designs into it. It’s very resistant to heat so it’s perfect for using as a mold to cast jewellery. Cuttle bone has a beautiful wavy texture that is transferred to the finished item. Here are some pictures of the process…
- Tracing the brass pattern onto the cuttle bone
- Carving the cuttle bone
- The finished cuttle bone carving
- Two halves of the mold
- The mold is wired together and ready to pour the metal
- The molten metal is poured into the mold
- These are the finished castings with the sprue button cut off
and here’s the finished earrings…
